A Harmonious Journey: Mastery and Esoteric Depth
Aurele Nicolet once said, "Maria plays with an intelligent sound," upon hearing her perform as a young flutist. Over the years, her sound has matured, embodying an esoteric depth that resonates with the soul of each composition. Maria believes that an artist's work should transcend the material senses, reaching the invisible platonic world of ideas governed by the laws of harmony. She instills in her students that a flutist’s mission is to serve wisdom through love, an essential quality of the sound they produce.
Maria stands among the true masters of her craft, effortlessly navigating technical challenges such as breathing, attack, and fingering. Her performances of Rodrigo’s ‘Concierto Pastoral’ and Paganini’s capriccios showcase not only her technical prowess but also her ability to deliver a compelling interpretation. Her flexible sound and unique tonal coloring bring each note to life.
She thrives on the challenge presented by compositions of great technical difficulty, finding artistic joy in their bravura and sparkle. Additionally, Maria is a piccolo virtuoso, known for producing a magnificent, smooth, and soothing sound, especially in the high notes, reminiscent of a nightingale.
A Lifetime of Musical Excellence and Achievement
Maria was born in Athens, where she began her musical education at the age of three with the Karl Orff method. She studied flute at the Conservatoire of Athens under Urs Ruttimann, graduating with Merit. She further honed her skills at the international flute seminar given by James Galway in Lucerne (Weggis) and at the University of Dublin.
As a soloist, Maria has performed with prestigious orchestras including the State Youth Orchestra, the Greek Kamerata, the State Symphony Orchestra of Thessalonica, the Radio Symphony Orchestra of Moscow, the Public Philharmonic Orchestra of Georgia (Tbilisi), and the Greek Radio Symphony Orchestra of Athens (ERA). She served as the principal flutist for ERA from 1993 to 2013 and has been a permanent member since 1987.
In 1992, Maria debuted Rodrigo's "Concierto Pastorale" in Greece as a flute soloist with the State Symphony Orchestra of Thessalonica. She later recorded the same concerto with the Radio Symphony Orchestra of Athens. Maria has participated in various musical ensembles and given recitals throughout Greece, performing on the 3rd Music Program of Greek National Radio as well as on National Television.
